Autism Sites – is there an agenda?

I have not been posting much recently as I don’t have access to my computer. But I have been accessing the Autism sites I belong to.

I am noticing more and more that there appears to be a desperate need to be accepted as someone with a problem. A bona fide issue that demands recognition.

Some use diagnosis as a way to justify weird behaviour, others to rant. Either way it clears a path to be as obnoxious as you like, to criticise others, and to come out completely vindicated.

How do you feel about this?!

Being creative is the mainstay of my life, and poetry, prose, and photography is where I express my deepest emotions. I also enjoy the challenge of design and create jewellery, fabric bags, and garments and home items in yarn. Diagnosed with ASD at the age of 68 after fifty years in and out of the mental health system, I now aim to explore and share my experiences over these years. Apart from blogs and short articles I'll share my life in my verse and images.

  1. That said, I totally do hope we get to a point where a lot of what most would call “weird” (aka fidgeting or sensory issues) are recognized as both totally fine and things that should be accommodated. Being a jerk is never ok, but asking for accommodations and being frustrated that the world won’t afford even simple ones is totally worth being frustrated about. In the ideal world, first do no harm to others…and beyond that let the weird flag fly and make whatever accommodations would make life easier for folks readily available.

    • Totally agree with your views. Weird wasn’t a good choice of word. I had been reading posts from a man who styles himself Evil Genius and basically he was berating all other posts. I didn’t mean what outsiders (again not perfect term) would consider weird. I meant weird in the sense of having a very specific agenda that led to haranguing anything anyone wrote.
I think my difficulties with posting are added to by having to use my mobile so I can’t easily go back to read the whole thing. I hope that makes some sense. Thank you for responding.
